A booming economy

Bayonne arrives in 4th position in the list of France’s “Business-friendly” cities. With 36,393 companies listed at the end of 2011 (source INSEE), the Basque Country confirms the trend already observed in 2009 with a 4.5% increase in businesses setting up in the region.

Our region has a diversified industrial fabric with a large number of flexible and independent SME’s. The Basque Country’s economy is structured around 5 main branches of activity:

  • Aeronautics: a business cluster with worldwide scope. “Aerospace Valley” stretching between Aquitaine and Midi-Pyrénées.
  • Agri-food: 3,000 jobs with 100 companies.
  • Boardsports: over 3,200 jobs in 400 companies, 5 of which are world leaders (Quiksilver, O’Neill, Billabong, Rip Curl, and Volcom) and sales worth of 1.2 billion euros over 1 year in Europe.
  • New Technologies: a sector focused on software publishing, laser technology, robotics, renewable energies, mechatronics, etc., with 1,000 jobs in 60 companies, including Robosoft and Exakis.
  • Metallurgy: 3,000 jobs mostly in civil engineering and construction, including Aciérie de l’Atlantique and Le Laminoir des Landes (Beltrame) at the Port of Bayonne.

The Basque Country boasts:

  • over a dozen major companies that are acknowledged world leaders in their respective markets.
  • over 15,500 employees with 125 companies of more than 50 employees .
